Green tobacco sales in Brazil has passed half of the harvest

The Association of Tobacco Growers in Brazil (Afubra) estimates that approximately 60% of Virginia tobacco production has been traded on the 2014/2015 crop in southern Brazil, which is equivalent to 360,966 tons of production estimate of 601,610 tons. For Burley variety, the entity selling points of 59,075 tonnes – around 71% of the planting forecast for the period of 83,230 tons. The sales index of common type tobacco shed, whose planting projection reaches 11,010 tons in Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, is 62% – about 6,840 tons.

As president of the Afubra, Benicio Albano Werner, the advance sale of the product is accompanied by assessors, who researches tobacco growers directly next to the property. Throughout this cycle, we have already been visited 1,480 families. Despite the crisis in the sector, the quantity sold is considered normal and equivalent to last year. “We are beyond the half of the period of sale. From now on, the producer begins to worry about preparing the next crop and should strive to market faster, “he says.

The director points out that the constant pressure of representative and public institutions with the industry bodies has contributed to a slight increase in prices. In the last two weeks, the Afubra accounts that the average per kilogram of tobacco, considering the three varieties, increased R $ 0.02, being R $ 7.32 per kilo. “The appreciation of the product has had a significant improvement,” he says. To adapt production to demand and contribute to this recovery, in late April the commission of tobacco growers held a series of meetings with business, when it was defined the need to reduce the size of the next harvest in 12% to Virginia, but without interfere with the structure of the production chain.
