Santa Cruz do Sul / RS – The commercialization of the 2014/15 crop has advanced during the month of June. Data from the Tobacco Growers Association of Brazil (Afubra) indicate that the volume delivered by the producers of the three southern states already nearing 90%. This means that the production estimated at 601,6 thousand tons of tobacco Virginia type, just over 60 tons are still with the tobacco growers. The expectation is that the sale is closed between late July and early August.
According to the treasurer of Afubra, Marcilio Drescher, from the end of May farmers are getting more for the product. “Overall there has been improvement over the standard that had been practiced earlier in the season, although some companies have maintained the same rigor in the standings,” he says. Drescher says that the improvement in prices is at the same time, celebrated and criticized by producers. “It’s always good to have a fairer remuneration for work of the whole year, no doubt. But at the same time, it is regrettable that only those who left the sale to the end is getting better prices. It is unbalanced situation when industries adopt a remuneration policy at the beginning and another at the end of the tobacco season.
Lower Production
The treasurer of Afubra reinforces the orientation so that the next crop, there is a balance between supply and demand on the tobacco market. The guidance is to be planted on average 10% less next season. “It is an adjustment in planted area. Besides avoiding that there is, at the end of the year, more tobacco than the market needs, the tobacco grower will reduce costs for labor and fuel. It is a very positive adjustment that needs to be done. The farmer only has to gain from it, “Mr Drescher adds”.
